Tozo is a policeman, but for his uniform to fit into the general look and feel of the city of Nova Venezia I had to go back to a time before modern police organizations existed. His uniform was originally based on that of the 19th Century British 11th Hussars (of Charge of the Light Brigade fame) to which I added a European style képi. I had trouble getting the balance right between 'soldier' and 'postman', especially when I added a cape to the mix (middle).

Although I felt the overcoat was successful, the grey was too drab - policemen are meant to stand out. Eventually I simplified the detail of the uniform and made it entirely red, so it looked less military, and gave Tozo a plain cloak that did not hide the distinctive colour.

The ordinary police constables have an even simpler uniform with Prussian Pickelhaube-style helmets, whilst conversely Commissioner Sforza is more ornately dressed with plenty of gold braid as befits his rank.
