His Dark Materials

They were auditioning in Cambridge this week for the part of Lyra in the first of the film versions of Philip Pullman's book trilogy, His Dark Materials. I only discovered the books about a year ago but was impressed (and a bit shocked) by their originality and breadth of ideas. They also make good source material for illustration ideas. Here's my version of the villainess, Mrs Coulter and the enigmatic Lord Asriel.

I love these. Just as I imagined them.

I love these books. So much more sophisticated than Harry Potter and quite shocking once you realise what they are saying and who they are aimed at.
Love the pics.

You've versions look nothing like I imagined them, but still look exactly right, really nice work. I like how it's possible to be faithful to the source material and yet still be unique to the artist.
Dark Materials is fantastic, not my major reintroduction to children's book but definitely what convinced me it was worth hanging around.
Oh, hello, BTW, I found you via Garen!

Hey cool pics! I always picture Mrs. Coulter as a 40s sort of glamourous woman too.

I never pictured Asriel so mafioso ish

I love His Dark Materials. I read them before Pullman was done with the 3rd book, and i thought I was going to go mad waiting for the final book.
